DataPoints: The National Data Commissioner's Closing Reflections
A special edition to let you know – in case you haven’t heard! – that after over three years as the National Data Commissioner, I am standing down from the role and retiring from the Australian Public Service on 22 August 2025.
It has been a privilege and a pleasure to serve as the inaugural Commissioner.
Following the passage of the legislation, the ONDC has built the DATA Scheme and the digital platform to support its operation. We have increased awareness and understanding of the Scheme, established a rigorous accreditation framework, and through that, fostered a trusted data sharing community. We have facilitated data sharing, enhanced transparency, and ensured Scheme participants are held accountable for meeting robust standards through regulation of the Scheme.
It has been challenging, but we have learnt a lot. Our experience has provided a valuable evidence base to inform the statutory review of the Data Availability and Transparency Act 2022, as well as the package of amendments we proposed to enable the Scheme to operate as intended and realise the vision of a step change in the use of public data to deliver benefits for Australians. I welcome and broadly support the review’s draft findings and recommendations.
My thanks to the many who have contributed to the endeavour with your energy, experience and expertise – the ONDC team, the National Data Advisory Council, Scheme participants and others, as well as the departments of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, and Finance, and Senator the Hon Katy Gallagher, the Minister for Finance – who have inspired, guided and supported me in the role.
Dr Andrew Taylor will act as National Data Commissioner from 23 August. The Department of Finance has released an expression of interest to appoint an acting National Data Commissioner for a period of 6 months.
With thanks again and best wishes,
Gayle
